One of the reasons many people choose a feline as a pet is because of its size, which fits into any home. However, there are huge breeds compared to the rest. So, in this article, we’ll tell you what the biggest breeds of cats are.

What are the biggest breeds of cats?

Among the dozens of breeds that we can find around the world, some are characterized by their large size. Therefore, the biggest cat breeds are:

  1. Maine Coon

With a weight of 11 kilos and a length of 70 centimeters (adult males), this cat, which  emerged after crossing domestic and wild cats in the United States,  draws a lot of attention.

While the  Maine Coon  – photo that opens this article – is huge, its temperament is similar to that of other breeds, and we can even say that it is more friendly and affectionate than the others. Likes to play and has the ability to meow in different tones. As for the fur, the most common is the brown and white mottled, although there are also black, gray, orange and red.

  1. Savannah

This is another of the biggest breeds of cats out there. The Savannah is famous for its leopard- like  fur. The breed arose after the crossing between a domestic cat and a wild one, Serval breed, native to Africa.

It’s not only beautiful to look at, but it’s also among the largest cat breeds in the world: an adult male can weigh up to nine kilos and measure about three feet. Females do not exceed seven kilos and 60 centimeters.

Its fur is white and abundant, and when you hold it in your arms, it relaxes so much that it appears to “disassemble” like a rag doll, hence its name.

  1. Turkish Van

It is a rare breed outside its breeding zone, Lake Van, Turkey (hence the name). The coat is one of its main characteristics: with several layers to resist the cold of the high mountain where it was born. Despite being thick, it’s also quite soft, like a rabbit’s fur  .
