Tips To Prevent Your Dog From Peeing Indoors

Tips to prevent your dog from peeing indoors

Even though our pet is part of our family, it should behave in the best way possible. We often don’t know how to teach him certain habits, and we end up punishing him when he does something wrong without realizing it. So, in this article we’ll give you some tips on how to prevent your dog from peeing indoors.

Is it possible to prevent your dog from peeing indoors?

The first and most important point is to understand why the animal needs to be in the wrong place.  If it is a puppy, it is because it has not yet learned to control its evacuation. In the case of an adult dog, the situation is different. That’s because it can have several reasons, from nervousness to fear, through anxiety, or even due to your need to mark territory.

It is essential to understand well that training at an early age is the most recommendable, rather than punishment. You don’t need to scold the animal, because it won’t understand that the pillow is new, that the floor was clean, or whatever you say. You just have to say a firm, blunt “no” so that he knows he’s done something wrong.

Also, in the case of puppies, you should practice the technique of ignoring him for a few minutes after scolding him. That way the dog will understand that you are upset and that he behaved very badly. If, on the contrary, he stops urinating in the house and pays attention to what you say, we advise you to reward him with a toy, treat or even lots of treats.

If you don’t have outdoor space and the dog spends many hours locked indoors alone, you will need to set aside an area where he can go about his business. Like cats, there are also “sandboxes” for dogs. Some of them even have artificial grass, for example.

If you are going to someone else’s home, or during the first few days of training, it is critical that you keep them under surveillance and that you pay close attention to their behavior. If you notice that he is sniffing a place a lot, or that he is about to pee (raising his paw or crouching), scold him before he pees.

Advice for your dog to pee in the proper place

Patience is key in these cases. Even if you don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to your dog, it  is essential that you at least pay attention to him during the first moments of living with the pet. Each animal takes time to learn, don’t force it or punish it if it doesn’t learn soon.

Dogs do not pee following logic or reasoning. They simply see a place that feels right to them and then go about their business. Obviously, they’ll want to keep their reserved spot clean (so they’re less likely to wet their own bed), and so they’ll find a suitable spot away from their stuff.

Some tips to prevent your dog from peeing indoors:

1. Use a dog transport crate

You should lock up your pet, while teaching him to wait to go outside to relieve himself. With the help of a cage or transport box, you will prevent the animal from peeing at home, as it will only be able to do its needs when you open the door (this is not recommended if you live in a condominium). The size of this “means of transport” should be large enough for the dog to be able to lie down and get around. If you don’t want to do this, you can take it with a collar, as short as possible, and tightly attached to you. That way he won’t be able to squat or lift his paw to pee anywhere.

 2. Keep an eye on him for 15 minutes

Did you know that puppies usually have a bowel movement within 15 minutes of eating, drinking, waking up, playing or running? After these activities, we recommend that you keep an eye on him to prevent him from peeing anywhere. And if it’s possible, take him for a walk in that time interval.

3. Delimit an area where he can do his needs

If you’re not staying home every day, you don’t want your pet to put up with no urination or defecation. Therefore, you should choose an area where he can take care of your needs without any problem. How to make the dog also able to choose the location? Drop a few drops of his urine so that the animal recognizes the place as its territory. Once you’ve completed your activities, take him there, so he knows that’s where he should evacuate.
