Characteristics of holland lop rabbits

This breed emerged in the 1950s in Holland, thanks to a breeder named Adriann de Cock, who crossed a French lop with a Dutch dwarf rabbit.

After several litters, he managed to get the ears of the Holland lop rabbits to droop.

This breed of dwarf rabbits weighing about two kilos at most have short and wide body, a little “compact” and  sitare like cats: the hind legs and slightly above the front.

Undoubtedly, the main physical characteristic of Holland lop rabbits are their ears, three centimeters wide which,  unlike other rabbits or hares, are on the sides, very close to the eyes and covered with fur.

Dense and silky, the fur  of this breed of rabbit must be brushed and cleaned periodically to keep it in good condition.

Also, it is normal for them to fall in the spring months.

Regarding  the colors of the mantle, they can be very diverse, but they are classified into two groups: solid (with a single tone) and mixed (with “spots” of one or more colors).  White, brown, gray and black stains are the most common.

The rabbit’s diet, which is herbivore,  cannot lack dry forage and concentrated feed,  which is purchased at pet stores.

This  will help your teeth not to grow larger than necessary and your digestive system to balance itself.

We must not forget to offer you fresh water daily.

Holland lop rabbits  can live in a cage indoors, which must be at least 70 cm².

You should take them outdoors once a day;  especially if you have access to a park, a garden or a yard.

So they can have fun running for a while or playing with some special pet accessory!

Holland lop’s health

Also, don’t forget that it’s a much more active animal at night, that it sleeps a lot during the day and sometimes with its eyes open.

Also, try to take them ‘for a walk’ at dusk or sunrise, when it’s less hot, because they suffer from very high temperatures.

Holland Lop rabbits  do not suffer from any hereditary disease.  But they do need annual vet visits to make sure they’re healthy and strong.

Early sterilization can prolong the animal’s life for up to 15 years  and thus improve its health.
