Japanese Spitz Characteristics

Known for its white, ‘spongy’ coat, pointy ears and curled tail, the Japanese spitz is one of the most popular breeds of late. Find out all about him in this article.

Japanese spitz story

It can be said that this is a modern breed, as its origins – although not entirely clear – date back to the 20s of the last century. However, some theories claim that the ancient Japanese spitz arrived in Japanese lands in 400 BC through maritime traders.

It is a very ‘local’ dog, as it took a long time to leave Japan for other locations. Its current purity is due, in part, to this fact, which has allowed its acceptance in most canine clubs. The American Kennel Club is an exception as it claims it is a subspecies of Pomeranian.

Physical characteristics

Medium sized, the Japanese spitz measures about 35 centimeters and weighs about 10 kilos. It has a broad, round head, a thin muzzle with a black nose, dark eyes and small, very pointed ears. Its tail draws attention as it grows curved upwards. That is, it rests on the back and is covered with hair.

Its main characteristic is related to the coat color, which is completely white. The coat of this breed is dense, spongy and soft. In addition, it is worth mentioning another peculiarity: it is a double coat. The inner layer is shorter and, together with the outer layer, can withstand low temperatures and even snow.

Depending on where it lives, the Japanese spitz can have several seasonal changes of fur, especially in autumn and spring. In addition, he has other age-related exchanges: the first occurs at five months, while the second occurs after the first year. Females may shed more hair because of hormonal changes that occur due to heat, pregnancy or lactation.

Japanese Spitz Temperament

It is a very intelligent, active and loyal dog, which is always aware of what its owner needs. At the same time, it adapts to any family environment and any space. Therefore, it is considered an excellent pet.

As if that wasn’t enough, he  gets along very well with children and other pets, even if they are of other species. However, it can be a bit dominant at times, creating conflicts with other dogs.

Japanese spitz care

The main care that the Japanese spitz needs has to do with its coat, which is prone to knots or to get stuck with dirt, especially if it is going for a walk in the park. If not brushed several times a week, the coat will be matted and will not have that ‘spongy’ characteristic.

As for physical activity, the Japanese spitz needs little exercise, but with a certain intensity. For example, going for a run for a few minutes every day.

This is a very healthy dog that, because of the purity of its breed, has no significant hereditary diseases. However, care should be taken as he is a little prone to kneecap dislocation if he exercises too much.

If you want to adopt a majestic-sized dog, one that stands out for its beauty, that likes to exercise and that loves to accompany you wherever you go, the Japanese spitz is ideal for you. Just make sure you keep your hair in good condition at all times!
