Until Death Do Us Part, Or Not… It’s Allowed To Bury Owners And Pets Together

Until death do us part, or not… It's allowed to bury owners and pets together

Having a pet is like raising a family, having an extra member. The love we have come to give them is more than we ever thought possible.

And they love us and show us boundless loyalty. Therefore, the death of a pet can be a very hard blow. And the same thing happens to them as to us when they lose their owners. This article talks about a new law created in New York: burying owners and pets together will soon be possible.

They say death is natural, but why do we suffer so much for it then? Why do we want to be close to our loved ones for all eternity? Anyone who has a pet would wish it could be buried in the same family grave.

That’s what New York Governor Andrew Cuomo thought.

A new law, burying owners and pets together

S ccording Andrew Cuomo for New Yorkers, the pets are up to one member more of the family, so permission for them to be buried together from their owners, or vice versa, should not surprise either. In fact, it is estimated that more than 60% of New Yorkers have a companion animal.

The idea is that pet cemeteries allow burying the ashes of owners with their animals. But these cemeteries could not charge separate quotas. Nor could they begin offering burials for humans.

By denying extra fees, it was ensured that this new legislation would not harm people’s cemeteries or become a double-edged sword.

Where did the idea of burying owners and pets together come from?

The idea grew out of growing requests from some New Yorkers that this could be a personal and viable decision. It would be a way of recognizing the close relationship that owners and their pets have.

The rate of pets is very high, since while New York is home to 8.5 million people, there are at least 1.1 million pets listed.

But it appears that this is not entirely new, as at the Harstdale Pet Cemetery they claim they have allowed this to be done since the 1920s. In fact, in 2011, one of the city’s deceased police officers was buried with his dog.

New York is not the only US state that offers this possibility. In Virginia, there are already pet cemeteries alongside those of people, and in Pennsylvania, they allow a person to be buried with their animal friend without the need for cremation of either.

Many people, before dying, ask to be buried with their husband or wife or any other family member, why can’t we choose then that this family member be our pet? In fact, there are many people, possibly elderly or single, who have no one else. The only member of your family is your pet. Why couldn’t they be together forever?

It seems that the governor of New York knows this very well and therefore created this new law that will allow to bury owners and pets together. At least for now it won’t be like in Pennsylvania, as legislation requires both remains to be separated. I mean, both cremated and in different urns.

Will this set the foundation for doing the same in other countries? It’s possible. Time will tell. Would you like to be buried with your pet?

There are more and more pet cemeteries and there are many options you can choose for them : cremation, burial, different urns for the ashes and exclusive tombs, will it be possible to be buried with the pets here too? We’ll see…
