How Do Dogs Form Knots In Fur?

It is necessary to avoid the common scissors to cut the knots in the dog’s fur, as they can hurt the animal.
How are knots in dog hair formed?

Although their formation may seem spontaneous, in fact, knots in dogs’ fur arise as a result of poor hygiene. Thus, providing specific care according to the breed is essential for the well-being of these animals.

The tendency of canine hair to tangle is a reality, especially in the case of long, curly and fine hair. However, the formation of knots in dogs’ fur is a combination of lack of brushing and dust. The problem with these characteristic knots in the animal’s fur goes beyond the aesthetic factor, as they can cause long-term skin infections.

Causes for the formation of knots in dog hair

A knot  is defined as a collection of hair that is tangled and wrapped around itself. Although they can appear anywhere on the body, the most common is to find them in areas that suffer some friction. Among the most prone areas are the neck, due to the presence of the collar, behind the ears, under the chin, in the armpits or on the underside of the hind legs.

Furthermore, it has  been observed that dogs that like to swim, or that bathe without being brushed afterwards, generally have more knots. This is because moisture causes the hair to curl up, which, along with body friction and dust, will end up in a series of knots.

Although any dog can have knots in its fur, they are more common in the poodle, bichon frisé, bearded collie, or long-haired colli. At the same time, it is worth noting that there are some specific breeds whose fur has a characteristic appearance, naturally curled. Some of them are: puli, komondor and pasto-bergamasco.

How to prevent knots

The main measure to prevent the formation of knots in dogs’ fur is to ensure proper brushing. For this, it is necessary not only to establish an adequate frequency, which will depend on the type of hair and whether it is time to change it, but also make sure to brush beyond the top of the hair.

To avoid brushing mistakes,  the best thing to do is to ask your veterinarian which type of comb is most convenient,  as there are from wide-tooth combs for double-haired dogs to models with pin bristles.

Using the right tool can be combined with creams or conditioners that facilitate the removal of knots when the hair is damp. All this must be accompanied by proper and regular hygiene, for which the hair must be trimmed, as often as necessary, by a canine beautician.

Despite the precautions indicated, if the knots appear, there is an adequate way to remove them without having to resort to normal scissors, which could injure the animal. In addition, the knot must be prevented from being brushed so that it does not grow in size and does not cause painful tugging.

Experts agree that nail clippers are the best tools to eliminate them, in the case of small knots, as well as razors or specialized scissors. However, before using them, the knot must be completely isolated from the rest of the dog’s coat. It is also  advisable to have an antiseptic on hand in case of an unexpected small cut.

In short

To prevent knots in dogs’ fur from becoming a major skin problem, they should be removed as quickly as possible. An accumulation of tight knots can impede the flow of air, trapping lice or other parasites inside, as well as causing pain and irritation.
