South American fauna reserves: discover 5 of them here!

In these South American fauna reserves, both fauna and flora are protected, a way to preserve the ecosystem of multiple species. Reserves on this list are in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela.

It is never too much to remember that human beings are predators capable of destroying the planet they inhabit.

Therefore, neither should we forget the efforts made to preserve ecosystems with their animal and plant species. Today we will talk about some South American fauna reserves.

Discover five reserves of South American fauna

Everything indicates that, although belatedly, we are increasingly aware of the need to protect the world’s natural wealth. Therefore, we can celebrate the growing number of parks, refuges and sanctuaries spread across the planet.

In the so-called new world, there are good examples of this. So, let’s detail five of them that preserve the South American fauna.

Península Valdés Integral Faunistic Reserve (Argentina)

Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, lions and elephant seals live there, as well as a wide variety of birds, spread over 360,000 hectares in the province of Chubut, in Patagonia . In addition, it is a breeding site for southern right whales.

The reserve has different areas of interest, such as:

  • Bird Island: has a good observatory to see, among other species of birds, seagulls, swallows, cormorants, penguins, oystercatchers and plovers.
  • Punta Norte Elephantry, the only continental settlement of these animals.
  • Colony of sea lions and elephants in Punta Delgada.
  • Settlement of birds and sea lions in Punta Piramides.
  • Caleta Valdés, with its islets populated mainly by flamingos, Magellan penguins, cormorants and other water birds. There are also elephant seals there.
  • In the peninsula’s steppe zone, you can see herds of llamas and nandu.

Central Amazon Conservation Complex (Brazil)

The country with the greatest biodiversity on the planet has numerous natural reserves.  One of them is the largest protected area in the Amazon basin, also declared a World Heritage Site. The site, with more than six million hectares, has the largest variety of electric fish on the planet.

The Central Amazon Conservation Complex is also home to endangered species.  This is the case of the giant pirarucu, the Amazonian manatee (photo), the black alligator and two types of river dolphins.

Eduardo Avaroa Andean Wildlife Reserve (Bolivia)

With 714,745 hectares of extension, and southwest of the Department of Potosí, this is another of the South American fauna reserves that we chose to highlight.

At an average altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level,  the site has a series of lagoons populated by, mainly, three species of flamingos  (Andean, Chilean and James).

In addition, other birds are observed in the reserve, such as nandu. Among the mammals, the vicuna, the llama and the viscacha stand out.

Chimborazo faunal production  reserve  ( Ecuador )

It includes the lands surrounding the Chimborazo volcano and covers 58,560 hectares 180 kilometers south of Quito. The reserve was designed, mainly, to carry out a South American Camelid Reintroduction Program.

Thus, grazing these animals ends up conserving the original vegetation cover and protecting water resources.

Ecuadorian fauna

In addition, we can see llamas, alpacas and vicuñas there. However, it doesn’t end there, the Andean wolf, Andean weasels, deer, skunks, rabbits, marsupial and cutina frogs, pacas, lizards and about 31 species of birds are also found there. Between them:

  • Curiking

  • Andean ducks and seagulls
  • Andean Copters
  • big snipe
