How To Keep The Dog From Asking For Food All The Time

It is really unbearable for our dog to ask for food like a desperation when we are sitting at the table. Some, even when we’ve finished eating. But they do their best to make us feel sorry for them to receive a little of what we are eating. In this article, we’ll tell you how to keep your pet away when you’re eating.

Is it normal for the dog to always ask for food?

Even though it’s a habit that bothers us and that we want to eradicate from our hairy, the truth is that we can’t blame you for it. It’s basically a matter of instinct  that, although it may be “hidden” with training, at some point it may surface again.

Maybe you don’t mind so much that your dog asks for food when you sit down to dinner. However, the problem starts if, for example, you have guests at home  and, at that time too, your dog will do his best “Shrek cat” face to get some of their chicken, a bone or a slice of bread .

The “greedy” dogs are experienced and know what to do to get what they want. And if there are children at home, they will be the main accomplices, giving you something from their own plate under the table.

How to prevent dog begging

They know how to make us break down and accept their blackmail. They make sad faces, cry… sometimes, they even call our attention with their little paws. But we must resist the temptation to give them food, because it encourages the habit.

Although the best thing would be to teach them since they were puppies not to ask for food from our plate, they often acquired this habit when they were just a few years old. So that you don’t feel like the worst owner in the world for not sharing your food with your pet, pay attention to these tips:

1. move the dog away from the table

When he rests his front legs on the table, we should get him out of there with a simple arm movement. This should be repeated over and over for several days.  After a week or two, the dog will understand that this is prohibited. Accompanied by the arm movement, say an effusive and direct “no”.

If that doesn’t work,  you’ll have to put up a kind of barricade or barrier so it doesn’t reach the table or around you.  For example, close the kitchen door, put in baby gates, or even leave it on the terrace or patio. Perhaps this may seem a little rude or heartless, but this will avoid the uncomfortable act of the animal asking for food all the time.

1. Feed him before or during the meal

Many dogs finish their meal in a matter of seconds, but there are others who may need a few minutes to swallow it all. A good idea is to serve them kibble at the same time we put our food on the table.  That way, we’ll have a few minutes of tranquility. Another option is to take advantage of the fact that he asks us for food so we can go to his trough and fill his plate. This way, the animal will understand the differences between canine and human menus.

You can give him a toy, for example, or one of these bones to chew on, so he’ll be distracted while you eat. If you have more than one dog, this would be the ideal time for them to go out and play in the backyard, on the terrace or on the balcony.
